What is fear of God?
Answer: First, we must define God before we can discuss fearing God. Fundamentally, the cause of fear is either understood or unknown. Many people fear darkness because it evokes anxiety; nevertheless, darkness is not inherently unknown; rather, what may exist within darkness becomes the source of fear. So we have no idea what exists within the darkness (even if it isn't terrifying). However, if a dangerous snake comes in front of us, we are understandably terrified. Let me give you another example: it is natural to be afraid when walking through a jungle filled with dangerous and wild creatures, but there is no reason to be afraid when walking through a garden.
Given the preceding example, if God is unknown to you, what does your fear represent? And if you know that God exists, what meaning does your fear have? Unfortunately, as a result of poor teachings and misguided beliefs, fear of God has become so entwined with unknowns that it cannot be simply removed from the minds of the public.
Certainly, it is impossible to dig into the issue of what God is or who God is here, because fear of God is an extremely large topic that cannot be covered in the span of this question and response. I'll just mention briefly that fear of God from a mystical perspective is a fearful love: fear of being separated from the gaze of the beloved, fear of being deceived by the world's illusions and falling from one's human dignity, and the fear of a lover towards their beloved, which is the most beautiful scene in the life of any faithful lover of God.
